I recently met a neighbor down the street that has a similar sized garden to me, but grows flowers and all in her front yard.

I didn't ask, but I think she sells them, which is super cool since we live in the city!

When I met her I told her how much I admire her flower garden every time I walk past it.

Today on our walk she saw us and gave us these seeds!!!

Every couple days I have more food to bring in and it's the best feeling.

Harvested the garlic today. I should have counted how many, but I didn't. I'd guess about 80? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I pick my tomatoes as soon as they start to blush because critters like to take exactly one bite out of them before moving on to the next. These are my very first tomatoes and I'm EXCITEDDDDD. Ask me how I feel about tomatoes in a few weeks tho.

I didn't plant a single sunflower this year, yet I have at least 40. I should really count them one of these days lol.

If you've struggled planting them, I highly suggest starting them indoors next year and transplanting them out.

I planted about 15 last year and I don't think I'll ever have to plant them again.

In the second picture, on the far right, you can see a sunflower bed. Those are all sunflowers that I dug up from other areas of my garden and transplanted in that bed.

As I get older I realize how much time I've wasted

As I get older I realize how much time I've wasted on things that don't really matter.

Things that don't really matter:
- Material things
- Other's opinions of you
- The Joneses
- Having the newest tech
- Having the greenest grass (😂😂😂)

Most of what we own is second hand or several models old and we like it that way!

You won't catch me working a job I don't like, to buy things I don't need, to impress people I don't like.

Work to live > live to work

Life is short!

I'm trying out my crockpot era.

I'm always so busy that half the time I don't even want to make dinner.

I love cooking from scratch, but between work and the garden this time of year, my time and energy are limited.

My plan is to make a handful of meals and put them into freezer bags for the week.

I know that this concept isn't new, but I had to be 37 to finally give it a shot. 😂

Do you think you have a black thumb??? Well, listen up! I'm a firm believer that there's no such thing!

I'm going to be sharing more of my fails on here for you guys so you can see that every gardener makes mistakes or kills something on the regular.

What happened to this cabbage is it went too long and should have been harvested a few days ago.

I went out of town for the holiday and came home to this. 😭💔

You CAN eat cabbage that's split, you just cut the split part out. It won't keep as long as a non-split head though so I'll have to use it right away.

The split part will go to the chickens and that's pretty much always my plan for things that are overripe or bolted (past their prime/went to seed). Worst case they head to the compost pile. Har har. Pun intended.

Jam is one thing that I never buy at the grocery store and mine tastes SO much better than anything you can buy.

I got these strawberries at a local farm that doesn't spray their berries.

My daughters spent the morning together one day and picked 26 lbs of delicious strawberries.

I only can jam every two years and still have some left from 2022.

It's amazing to me how much I've accomplished since building this garden two years ago.

I started with two raised beds, then had four for awhile. Two years ago I started taking growing my own food more seriously.

I wish I documented more of my journey to get here. I didn't document it because my garden isn't the most aesthetically pleasing garden.

I have weeds and chicken bedding everywhere and little odds and ends lying around my garden that never seem to get picked up.

I'm getting older and luckily caring less about how people perceive me and damn does it feel good.

I'd rather have an ugly garden than no garden! 💯

Several years ago, my husband and I built two smal

Several years ago, my husband and I built two small raised beds in our backyard. A few years later I purchased two more 4x4 raised beds from Amazon. Fast forward a few years and I tore those beds out and created a 20x20 in-ground garden.

Today, I have about 1,500 square feet of garden with grow bags, raised beds and a large in-ground garden, 4 laying hens and 20 coturnix quail that we hatched from eggs.

In addition to the garden and birds, I preserve my food, cook some food from scratch and I'm slowly learning more about medicinal plants.

If you're interested in homesteading, you can start right where you are. You don't need to be living in a farmhouse in the country.

This belief held me back for so many years! I'm so glad that I looked into homesteading skills that I can start right where I'm at.

I'm also not gonna lie, I have no idea what I'm doing. Google, youtube and a handful of books are where I got my gardening "degree." 😂 My motto is fail forward!
